Palmdale, California, is approximately 50 miles north of Los Angeles. The city is on the western edge of the Mojave Desert in Antelope Valley. Accessible by both Metrolink rail service and the scenic Antelope Valley Highway, Palmdale is convenient for both a weekend get-away and side trips.
With the San Gabriel Mountains to the south and the Tehachapi Mountains bordering the valley to the northwest, the area offers great outdoor opportunities. There are many hiking trails, both in the mountains and the desert. A good option for a day hike is the Saddleback Butte Trail in Saddleback Butte State Park. A side trail from the saddle leads to the summit, and panoramic views. Also near Palmdale, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is bursting with color from March to May each year.
Aeronautic and aerospace history fans will find plenty to keep them busy in Palmdale. Located to the north of town, Air Force Plant 42 has two open air museums along Avenue P. The Blackbird Airpark, which displays Blackbird aircraft, and the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark, with various retired military aircraft on display. There are other displays around town and in neighboring cities, as well.
Along with the many outdoor opportunities, there are also camping opportunities and RV parks. For those interested in an overnight trip but not looking to camp out, there are Palmdale hotels to fit most budgets. Metrolink offers daily service between Palmdale and the LA Basin, with a limited weekend schedule. The Palmdale regional airport does not offer commercial service, though private flights may be available.
Ideally located near Los Angeles, Palmdale is a great escape. Two hours away from the city by rail, or over scenic routes by car, the city is far enough to feel like a real trip without taking all day.

One of the nicest holidays I ever took was a tour of the Australian coast between Sydney and Melbourne. There was beautiful scenery, heaps of things to do and sociable Australian people.
With plenty of car rental Sydney and car rental Melbourne alternatives along the coast, hiring a car is the most convenient way to make your way around. Car hire agencies are more than willing to assist you plan your trip and pin point the main tourist attractions along the way. I found a great deal travelling from Sydney to Melbourne just by doing a quick search online.
I began my journey by heading south from Sydney through the Royal National Park. I was blown away by the Grand Pacific Drive, it was breathtaking. I took my time exploring coastal villages and spent a couple hours in the bustling city of Wollongong before ending for the night at Jervis Bay.
Jervis Bay is known for their dolphin population, I took a cruise the next morning to experience watching the dolphins swimming just metres away from the boat, truly awesome. The immaculate white sand beaches made it extremely difficult to leave given that I am visiting from England. Further south I picked up some great, high quality craft items in the historic villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba.
I swam in the lagoon at Mimosa Rocks National Park and then drove a little further stopping to watch surfers at Tathra Beach. That evening I stayed in the trendy village of Metung and had a tremendous seafood platter in one of the lakeside restaurants.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is home to great scenery and an abundance of wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas and wombats. I spent an entire day hiking through eucalypt forests, exploring beaches and coves and climbing on granite mountains.
Next destination was Fish Creek, a tiny, quirky and thriving town with arts and crafts, books and cafes. I took the bridge over to Phillip Island, a popular family stop. At Nobbies Centre you can watch the penquins strutting up and down the beach and see one of Australia’s largest fur seal settlements.
As initially planned, I ended my trip in Melbourne making my last stop at the heritage farm on Churchill Island. Renting a car was a convenient and fun way to do this awesome coastal drive from Sydney to Melbourne. Next time I may get a car rental in Melbourne and do this trip the other direction!
