Europe’s two major telecom players France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have recently announced that they are planning to merge their UK offices into a single major unit. However, analysts say that this move, which has come as a great surprise to all, will not be as simple as it sounds.
Analysts like Analysys Mason claim that this merger will lead to the merged company being the biggest and possibly the best broadband provider in the UK, outdoing players like O2 and Vodafone. This market monopoly is something that will definitely not go down very well with the supervisory body. In fact, the regulatory authorities are strictly against such mergers because they feel that they will ultimately reduce competition in the market. Hence, there is no assurance that this merger will be approved by the body. However, analysts also state that in case this merger is approved, it will be accompanied by a list of conditions that the merged company will need to fulfil, and this may include provision for better rural broadband.
Mason also stated that mergers have been very common in Europe, with Austria and the Netherlands witnessing some major mergers that have reduced the number of providers in these nations to four and three respectively. The UK will also witness its share of mergers, possibly reducing the number of providers to three in the near future. However, Mason has added that a merger between giants like O2 and Vodafone will not be allowed to happen.

News site The Register has reported that “some” O2 subscribers are again facing network problems that seem to be affecting the company a lot these days. As it turns out, this time O2 networks are not pairing well with 2G and 3G connections, which probably has led to the whole problem. Even distant areas like Brighton and Liverpool have been experiencing technical difficulties, which shows that the problem is much bigger than it is believed to be.
The very first time that any issue came to light was a few weeks ago when a data failure resulted in users losing internet connectivity, emailing and texting functions. The problem was promptly addressed, and a flawed GPRS system was held responsible for the situation. An O2 spokesperson had apologized for the inconvenience and had promised that the situation would be completely tackled in no time.
However, another situation soon crept up when a few days later, the system again crashed, leaving roaming users with no voice or data accessibility. O2 again apologized, and had its engineers quickly fix the glitch. An O2 spokesperson assured users that everything was all right and that connections would be restored in no time.
However, the third time round, it was confirmed that something had seriously gone wrong with the O2 networks. Although the provider as usual has managed to solve the issue promptly, it has not revealed as to what the real cause behind the present malfunctioning was.
O2 every time seemed deeply apologetic for all the trouble that had been caused to its customers, but it remains to be seen if it will be able to avoid another such incident. Having made calls using VoIP without issue for a long time I was perplexed as to why recently I had been having lots of issues. The quality of sound has gone right down and latency issues have increased significantly. Users on VoIP online forums in the US and other countries, including Germany and Mexico, having issues since last year. For a while VoIP might seem like a good deal for the average person, more established interests in the telecoms industry view it differently - and are trying to make a stand.

Mindful of what has happened in other countries the UK telecoms regulator Ofcom took the unusual action in February of announcing that it will look at the burgeoning VoIP industry and report next month on whether new laws are necessary to shield it. The consultation document says: “VoIP service providers have expressed concern that their ability to provide a reliable service may be impacted by internet access providers (ISPs) selectively degrading or blocking their VoIP traffic.”
Ofcom says it has no evidence this is happening in the UK; only about 000 customers use VoIP. But the forecast is for that to rise by 4m in the next six months.
And VoIP barring occurs in other countries, often those where there is still only a single incumbent telecoms company. In Saudi Arabia, for example national carrier Saudi Telecom is using software from US supplier Narus to block all VoIP phone calls.
Telecommunication companies in the US as well as other countries are hesitant to have their bandwidth taken up by traffic from which they receive no funds and have been challenged over similar alleged incidents of VoIP blocking. Hindering Voice over IP traffic is complicated but not illegal and blocking specific types of internet traffic is going up.
The European based VoIP giant Skype who are now owned by the pre-eminent auction site eBay has been particularly controversial. Skype is used by 75m people. But not everyone wants Skype on their network.
Skype is considered by a lot of people to pose a potential security threat because it opens an encrypted channel out of the network and forms supernodes that sit on a network and set up VoIP calls.
