Telecoms Package to Change the Scenario of Broadband Connectivity in the UK

Overhaul of telecoms laws has been the subject of much debate and discussion among parliament members, and a voting for the overhaul that took place in the parliament today will have direct influence on internet usage in Britain.

The vote has become the subject of heated controversy because of its mandate to penalize persistent offenders who download copyright materials illegally. The penalty would be disconnection of broadband services, a move that is considered by experts to be too harsh.

The Telecoms Package has been introduced after it won more than 500 votes, and it has proposed ‘internet freedom’, which implies that users should have the right to decide what they should see (or download). However, critics do not find it to be a viable solution to the existing problems.

According to the features of the package, there would be no inequality in distribution of mobile broadband services across the EU, and the ground would be cleared for the technology of the future. The package also advocates a concerted effort from all regulatory bodies to work together in formulation of regulations and in their implementation.

EU commissioner for information, society and the media, Viviane Reding said that the package would assist in overcoming imbalances in physical access to digital technology and enable proper allocation of digital spectrum, so that everyone can get broadband connection at affordable prices (see cheapest broadband).

According to Reding, use of spectrum will lay more stress on better technological innovation and also innovation in service, so that users get the best value for money.

Mobile Broadband to Make Huge Contribution to Economic Growth of US

Julius Genachowski, chairman of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), is among the main proponents of the growth of mobile broadband and a believer in its likely contribution to the economic growth of the US.

Mr Genachowski, in his recent statement at the CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment show held in San Diego, California, said that he has witnessed mobile technology undergoing a major role change from a distant fantasy to an integral part of a company’s business strategy. He seemed to have no inhibitions in expressing his views on this matter.

According to Genachowski, the FCC is determined on providing the telecoms industry with the best support systems and promoting investment and innovation by eliminating the hurdles for next generation mobile phones, in addition to providing greater broadcasts spectrum.

Genachowski also spoke on the controversial issue of net neutrality and the related regulatory decisions that have been the cause of disagreement for most of the service providers, whether wired or wireless. These decisions are aimed at curbing the discretionary powers of ISPs regarding the display of some content and the blocking of others. The providers argue that the regulations put unreasonable restrictions on their network management.

Genachowski tried to persuade the operators in particular that he was aware of the differences in the network management of fixed and mobile network, as well as the position of providers vis–vis government interference.

T-Mobile/Orange Proposed Merger May Not Be Approved by Regulatory Body, Claim Analysts

Europe’s two major telecom players France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have recently announced that they are planning to merge their UK offices into a single major unit. However, analysts say that this move, which has come as a great surprise to all, will not be as simple as it sounds.

Analysts like Analysys Mason claim that this merger will lead to the merged company being the biggest and possibly the best broadband provider in the UK, outdoing players like O2 and Vodafone. This market monopoly is something that will definitely not go down very well with the supervisory body. In fact, the regulatory authorities are strictly against such mergers because they feel that they will ultimately reduce competition in the market. Hence, there is no assurance that this merger will be approved by the body. However, analysts also state that in case this merger is approved, it will be accompanied by a list of conditions that the merged company will need to fulfil, and this may include provision for better rural broadband.

Mason also stated that mergers have been very common in Europe, with Austria and the Netherlands witnessing some major mergers that have reduced the number of providers in these nations to four and three respectively. The UK will also witness its share of mergers, possibly reducing the number of providers to three in the near future. However, Mason has added that a merger between giants like O2 and Vodafone will not be allowed to happen.

Network Crises in a Row Bringing Down O2 Services

News site The Register has reported that “some” O2 subscribers are again facing network problems that seem to be affecting the company a lot these days. As it turns out, this time O2 networks are not pairing well with 2G and 3G connections, which probably has led to the whole problem. Even distant areas like Brighton and Liverpool have been experiencing technical difficulties, which shows that the problem is much bigger than it is believed to be.

The very first time that any issue came to light was a few weeks ago when a data failure resulted in users losing internet connectivity, emailing and texting functions. The problem was promptly addressed, and a flawed GPRS system was held responsible for the situation. An O2 spokesperson had apologized for the inconvenience and had promised that the situation would be completely tackled in no time.

However, another situation soon crept up when a few days later, the system again crashed, leaving roaming users with no voice or data accessibility. O2 again apologized, and had its engineers quickly fix the glitch. An O2 spokesperson assured users that everything was all right and that connections would be restored in no time.

However, the third time round, it was confirmed that something had seriously gone wrong with the O2 networks. Although the provider as usual has managed to solve the issue promptly, it has not revealed as to what the real cause behind the present malfunctioning was.

O2 every time seemed deeply apologetic for all the trouble that had been caused to its customers, but it remains to be seen if it will be able to avoid another such incident. 3g Internet: Mobile Internet for those on the Go

Have you been dreaming of being able to stay online even when you are traveling? This has been a common aspiration for people who travel to different places to conduct their business, as time has been truly precious for them. Well, this is a dream no more, for thanks to 3g internet, you can now keep yourself updated online anywhere you may be.

3g internet is the latest innovation in the world of internet communications. By the use of a 3g modem attached to a laptop via USB, you can now go online and surf the internet without the need of Wi-Fi signals or wires that keep you in one place.

3g internet has truly been convenient mainly because you are no longer restricted to one location to check emails, chat with people, or update your online bank accounts. To those who do most of their businesses online, this service has truly served its purpose.

It also poses a great alternative to DSL, as there are times when you are not comfortable working in just one part of the house, you can move your computer to another room or even the garden and still stay connected because of the 3g modem.

Today’s providers already have large numbers of 3g internet packages; full details can be found at Mobile Broadband Genie.

Is it Possible to Selectively Bar VoIP?

Having made calls using VoIP without issue for a long time I was perplexed as to why recently I had been having lots of issues. The quality of sound has gone right down and latency issues have increased significantly. Users on VoIP online forums in the US and other countries, including Germany and Mexico, having issues since last year. For a while VoIP might seem like a good deal for the average person, more established interests in the telecoms industry view it differently - and are trying to make a stand.

Consultation

Mindful of what has happened in other countries the UK telecoms regulator Ofcom took the unusual action in February of announcing that it will look at the burgeoning VoIP industry and report next month on whether new laws are necessary to shield it. The consultation document says: “VoIP service providers have expressed concern that their ability to provide a reliable service may be impacted by internet access providers (ISPs) selectively degrading or blocking their VoIP traffic.”

Ofcom says it has no evidence this is happening in the UK; only about 000 customers use VoIP. But the forecast is for that to rise by 4m in the next six months.

And VoIP barring occurs in other countries, often those where there is still only a single incumbent telecoms company. In Saudi Arabia, for example national carrier Saudi Telecom is using software from US supplier Narus to block all VoIP phone calls.

Telecommunication companies in the US as well as other countries are hesitant to have their bandwidth taken up by traffic from which they receive no funds and have been challenged over similar alleged incidents of VoIP blocking. Hindering Voice over IP traffic is complicated but not illegal and blocking specific types of internet traffic is going up.

The European based VoIP giant Skype who are now owned by the pre-eminent auction site eBay has been particularly controversial. Skype is used by 75m people. But not everyone wants Skype on their network.

Skype is considered by a lot of people to pose a potential security threat because it opens an encrypted channel out of the network and forms supernodes that sit on a network and set up VoIP calls. There is considerable debate about how much bandwidth such supernodes eat up. There have been claims that in supernode mode, Skype could possibly saturate a 100 Mbps line.

Completely Cost Free 12 Month Mobile Phones

Most people tend to have little knowledge of free line rental deals becuase of the fact they are a new phenomenon. 12 month free line rental products are the greatest give away in the midst of all of the products around.

In practice a free line rental phone contract should not cost a penny to operate. That is, as long as the individual concerned correctly makes a claim for refund by redemption. More often than not this is not as simple as consumers are lead to believe due to the fact that sellers build in catches with the small print of free line rental contracts so as to reduce the quantity of successful consumers.

A free line rental phone contract is a form of 100% cashback by redemption package. With these deals you must continue to pay the mobile phone costs just like normal for the first months. Further on in the contract in the mobile phone contract you must to claim 100% of the cost of the mobile back from the shop who first offered you the mobile.

A significant pitfall of free line rental deals is the fact that should the shop stop trading you will lose the ability to get your money back. Free line rental is a trade off, as it is usually only available with near obsolete handsets.

In spite of the complications of free line rental contracts they are completely legitimate and customers are able to find 100% cost free mobile phone for 12 months.

Accross the entire market the most competitive way to buy a free line rental phone contract is online. As free line rental products are something of a specialised product it is advisable to use a comparison site specialising in mobile phones to find the most cost competitive products at the time.
