Party Promises a Connected UK

With the general elections around the corner, the parties are now preparing and releasing their manifestos aimed at tempting the electorate to vote for them. Keeping with tradition, the Labour party recently released its party manifesto.

But what could be made out to be a major flaw in the manifesto, the party has promised high speed home broadband connections of two megabytes per second to all homes in the UK.

This is in no way a different or new pledge for the party, as it has been promising to provide a two megabits broadband connection to the country’s homes for some time. What is striking is that this promise is yet unfulfilled and there is no reason for the electorate to believe that the promise of high speed connections will be fulfilled anytime soon.

Recently, the party has been facing flak for the indifference shown to the Digital Economy Bill in the House of Commons. With Internet service providers and consumers alike being directly affected, this bill with more than forty two clauses was passed in less than two hours.

The clause in the manifesto is being seen as a major goof up from the party’s side. In a general election that is going to be closely fought and with an electorate that has increasing technological needs, these mistakes can cost the Labour party heavily.

Apple Looks for LTE Technology Experts, Sparks 4G iPhone Rumours

Apple has put up a job opening on its website, calling for a cellular technology software manager who also has advanced knowledge of LTE technology.

This has sparked off rumours that the iPhone 4G is ready for release sooner than expected. As always, the slightest hint can give birth to the wildest rumours where technology is concerned. Before these speculations began, it was expected that the iPhone 4G would not be released before 2011, essentially because the 4G chip manufacturers have expressed their inability to send out the chips before the first quarter of next year. However, this job advertisement by Apple is fuelling the rumour that this much awaited release may be earlier, even in the summer of 2010 at least in United States.

Apple fans have been eagerly waiting for this incarnation of the iPhone. To be able to move from 3G to 4G means super fast mobile download speeds of over 40 to 50MB. Mobile downloads at that speed coupled with user friendly features is something that every mobile broadband user looks forward to. This is what Apple intends to capture and consolidate.

With Apple’s advertisement, speculations are rife that the release may happen earlier than expected. With Sprint’s WiMAX network supporting EVO 4G from HTC, Apple is looking forward to capture this share of market with LTE technology, the next standard on mobile broadband on its iPhone.

Staying Ahead with the Cloud

Everyone knows that small and medium-scale enterprises are currently faced with even more pressure than ever. The harsh economic climate presents the challenge of delivering cost savings to IT teams. Aside from that, they have to tap into new IT systems that are touted to provide business improvements at the soonest possible time.
Instead of simply working on enhancing productivity, a number of businesses have grown critically dependent on IT in order to efficiently function. The problem is that it is difficult to secure funding for new IT projects because of their large upfront costs. The market uncertainty is hindering companies from spending on IT and this also makes long-term strategic IT planning even more difficult.
Because of these conflicting pressures, small and large businesses are now leaning towards outsourcing, tapping into the resources and professional expertise of managed private cloud service providers for hosting their virtual infrastructure.
A fully managed hosting solution makes sure that an organization’s IT infrastructure is constantly available, backed up, running and protected without affecting its efficiency. Hosting virtual servers in world class data centers assures companies that business data, applications and network are located in a carefully managed and fully resilient environment. This is essentially what hosting in the Cloud means. Cloud hosting allows clients to enjoy the utility-like payment scheme, providing them access to an extensive range of cloud services.
To get started, it is important for organizations to determine which data has to be outsourced. Every company has a different set of requirements as far as IT services delivery is concerned. This is why cloud based services are not created equal. For instance, if the organization cannot afford to host its key critical servers offsite, would not be practical to offsite storage because of network latency concerns.

Government Initiates Schemes for Better Computer Literacy

The use of computers in our day-to-day life is continuously increasing and hence the UK government has announced the launch of a new training programme to provide basic computing skills to its citizens. According to estimates there are nearly 11.3 million people who do not possess basic computing skills. This Online Basics Scheme set up by the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, will teach typing and skills in controlling the mouse along with skills in browsing and emailing.

This course will be available online and free of cost. Interested people having a personal computer and access to the internet can take this course from their respective homes, whereas those who do not can go to the closest online centre to take this course. These online centres have been set up at many places like London, Gloucester, Oldham, Barnsley and Devon. The course has been segmented into five easy-to-follow modules. After successfully completing this course users will be able to use the internet for their personal benefit. The internet will help in education, entertainment and also in getting a better paid job especially in the case of seniors.

The government plans to enrol at least one million computer illiterates within the next three years. In order to increase the use of computers and facilitate the growth towards a digital society, along with this training programme the Government has decided to give laptops and a year’s internet connections free of cost under the Home Access scheme.
