Why Search Engines Still Rely on Directories

October 20th, 2009

Almost everyone is confident with using search engines nowadays, as they allow us to discover things rather speedily. This is fundamental, never the less search engine results aren’t filtered by humans, but by an algorithmic rule. So why would that be significant? Well, imagine you are looking for a hotel in Manchester as an example. You would type these keywords into Yahoo! (for example), then a number of results would be presented. How can one know whether these results are trusted if they’ve never been filtered by people? Here’s the solution: search engines employ human-administered online directories as a rudamentary filter.

Directories still play a part online, and the most discriminating directories are unavoidably human edited. A human may recognize that (for instance) : “that hotel has been awarded a particular rating for cleanliness and having certain standards, that’s a very good sign”. A well-known directory will receive a number of entries on a daily basis. An official will look into these submissions, and if the official is satisfied that the quality of the submission is good enough, it is appended to the online directory. And this is the reason why Google still loves internet directories. Both the Yahoo! directory and dmoz.org are interrogated by search engines as filters to find out the trustworthiness of a website - whether it’s included in dmoz.org / Yahoo! directory or not, as they are edited by people and have demanding rules-for-entry.

And So do not understate the implication of internet directories just because most individuals use search engines to discover things. A human-edited directory can be an essential yardstick as to how trusted a website is. If you own a website, seek to get your site added in a niche directory, like a DIY directory, a self-catering directory, or a pub and restaurant directory.

While humans are needing signs of trustiworthiness, the internet will always require people to issue their stamp of approval, and so directories will always play a part.
